What exactly does Mer et Design do?
Mer et Design is a naval architecture firm specialized in custom vessel design.
We handle your project from A to Z: defining your needs, designing the vessel architecture, conducting technical calculations (stability, performance, structure), creating detailed plans, and supporting the shipyard through to regulatory compliance.
Where do you operate?
Our headquarters are in Sophia Antipolis (South of France), but our reach is global.
We deliver projects across mainland France (Atlantic, Mediterranean, English Channel), in French overseas territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Polynesia…), the Indian Ocean (Mauritius, Madagascar…), West Africa, and parts of Europe (such as Ireland).
What types of vessels do you design?
We design custom vessels for a wide range of civil, professional, and recreational uses.
Our expertise covers passenger transport units (monohulls, catamarans, fast ferries), workboats, fishing vessels, cruising sailboats, and yachts.
Do you also handle technical calculations and regulations?
Yes. All technical calculations (stability, seaworthiness, structural strength, performance, fuel consumption, etc.) are carried out in-house by our engineering team.
We also manage the entire regulatory process: submitting files to maritime authorities, and ensuring compliance with international standards (IMO rules, ISO standards, fire safety, accessibility, etc.).
Do you integrate eco-friendly solutions into your designs?
Yes - eco-design is a core part of our approach.
Where relevant, we use low-impact materials such as recyclable aluminum or bio-based composites, study hybrid, electric, or solar propulsion options, and optimize hull shapes to reduce drag and energy consumption.
Does Mer et Design build the vessels?
No, we are not a shipyard. We are a design and engineering office.
We collaborate with trusted shipyards in France and internationally.
We provide all plans and technical specifications, and ensure technical support throughout the construction process.
How long does a full project take?
A passenger vessel project typically takes 12 to 24 months from the initial sketches to launch.
The timeline depends on the vessel’s size and complexity, as well as administrative and construction schedules.
